Preparing for Your Field Trip

Prepare for your visit

Be sure to take time before your visit to review the following information with your students and adult chaperones so everyone is prepared for their visit.

  • Review your confirmation

Thoroughly review your confirmation letter and agenda. Is everything accurate including arrival time, lunch time, Museum Store schedule, and area you wish to visit? The Museum Store and lunch areas are available by reservation. Please consider reserving a time when making your tour arrangements. Share confirmation information with all leaders in your group.

Teachers and school employees are admitted free. We welcome additional adult chaperones at the $5 student rate.

  • Make one payment for your entire group

Your school/organization is responsible for payment for the total number of students in your group plus the cost for any additional adults. Designate one person (payment leader) to make a payment for your entire group. We accept VISA, MasterCard or checks (payable to Wisconsin Historical Museum). Please note that other discounts, such as free passes or memberships, are not applicable for field trips.

  • No student backpacks are allowed in the Museum

For the safety of historic artifacts and for the comfort of all visitors, students are not to wear backpacks. Students should plan to leave their backpacks at school or on the bus on the day of the trip. Adult chaperones may carry backpacks as necessary. No food, candy, gum or beverages (other than water) are allowed in the Museum exhibits areas or Museum Store. Students may bring water bottles, but are asked to keep them closed inside the Museum.

  • Late arrivals/cancellations

Groups arriving late or early may have their itinerary altered. Notify us as soon as possible if you will not be on time.

  • Organize your students into groups

Each classroom will be assigned a tour guide, please have your classrooms divided upon arrival.

  • Have sack lunches gathered in sturdy, rigid containers

Clearly label containers with your school name. Encourage students to have their names on their own lunches. Lunches may be taken off the bus and stored, depending on your tour arrangements. Wisconsin Historical Museum staff will help you make this determination upon arrival. Please note that refrigerated storage is not available.

  • Prepare your students

Remind all group members that they are ambassadors for their organization and community. Please show respect for our Museum — treat buildings and objects gently and dispose of trash in the garbage so that the things that you enjoy today can be enjoyed by other schools and visitors many years into the future.

  • Check in at the main entrance before beginning your tour

Upon arrival, a Tour Services Associate will review your itinerary and guide your group to a programming space for a general introduction and program directions. Your Tour Services Associate will also help with your group’s coat, backpack and lunch storage needs.

  • Museum artifacts should not be handled

Direct your students to follow the instructions of Museum staff. During interactive exhibits, students will be instructed about which objects are okay to handle. If students have questions about an object, encourage them to ask.
